Prosciutto di Parma is a typical cured meat product of the province of Parma. It is famous throughout the world and stands out not only for its nutritional qualities (the only ingredients are pork and salt, with no additives or preservatives) but also for the "crown", the brand name that is branded only on the original.

The centuries-old tradition and the exclusive speciality of the Prosciutto di Parma and the Parma butchers has its roots back in Roman times. Cato himself in the second century BC, in his De agri cultura, outlines the production technique, substantially identical to the current one. Going back through the centuries, many great writers spoke about the ham and its preparation technique.

The development of this tradition was undoubtedly influenced by the presence in the area of Parma of salt springs such as those of Salsomaggiore. The primitive phase, entirely artisan, has progressively developed up to the modern-day towards a process of industrialization which, by significantly improving hygienic conditions, has been able to keep intact the traditional characteristics of the product.
